Abstract/Sommario:
The exceptional material wealth and food security currently enjoyed by many humans have grown out of millennia of accumulated social and technical learning. Despite many societal and population collapses over the past 12,000 years, an era of unprecedented climate stability, we have been able to continue to accumulate knowledge. We gradually applied it to earth’s rich natural resource base but unlocking stores of very dense energy greatly accelerated our rate of progress.
